Insulated glass units and foggy window glass
A foggy window with a sealed glass unit can often keep its frame and get new glass.
North Hill Glass and Mirror replaces foggy and failed insulated glass units in windows that are otherwise fine. We do this work in our shop and on site. The shop is at 560 N. Main St in Akron, and you can reach us at (330) 535-1558. Tell us how many windows are affected and send a photo, and we will take it from there.
What an insulated glass unit is
An insulated glass unit is two layers of glass held a small distance apart by a sealed edge, with a gap between them. Many windows in homes are built this way. The unit sits inside the window frame like a sealed sandwich.
When that seal fails, moist air gets into the gap. You see it as fog, haze or water spots between the layers of glass. Because the moisture is trapped inside, wiping the glass does nothing. Fog that clears when you wipe it is sitting on the surface of the glass, which is a different matter from a failed seal.
A fogged unit does not mean the whole window is finished. If the frame, the sash and the hardware are still in good shape, the fix is to replace the sealed unit and keep the rest.
What we do
We replace the failed unit rather than trying to clear the fog. The work is done on site and in our shop. Describe the window and we will talk through which way suits your job.
Same-day insulated glass units are offered. Call with your measurements to confirm timing for your job.
Insulated glass units are also something we handle when a unit is broken, not only when it is foggy. If one layer of the glass is cracked or shattered in a sealed unit, the whole unit is generally replaced.
This service covers the glass unit. If a window has a damaged frame, we do not repair or replace frames, so call and describe it. Our window glass replacement page lays out the scope. For plain single pane glass or storm windows, see window glass repair.
What to have ready when you call
- How many windows are foggy or broken, and where they are in the house.
- Where the haze sits. If you can wipe it off, it is on the surface. If you cannot, it is between the layers.
- The size of the glass if you can measure it, or a photo of the whole window taken from inside.
- Close photos showing the fog or the break.
- Anything else about the window you think matters, such as a frame that is damaged or a window that no longer opens.
If you have more than one foggy window, list them all at once. It helps us see the whole job.
Where we work
We serve customers in Akron and Summit County, and in parts of Cuyahoga, Medina, Portage, Stark and Wayne counties. The service area page lists the places we cover, and our Akron page has the shop details.
Questions
Why is my window foggy between the panes? In general, the seal around the glass unit has failed and air with moisture has gotten into the gap.
Do I need a whole new window? Not if the rest of the window is fine. We replace foggy or failed insulated glass in an otherwise good window.
Do you do this at my house or in your shop? Both. We do this work on site and in our shop.
