North Hill Glass and Mirror supplies clear plastic sheet, including plexiglass (acrylic) and polycarbonate, for windows, signs and protective panels. Our shop is at 560 N. Main St in Akron, and the phone number is (330) 535-1558. Tell us what the panel is for and how big it needs to be, and send a photo if you have one.

What clear plastic sheet is

Plexiglass, which is acrylic, and polycarbonate are two kinds of clear plastic sold in flat sheets. Both can stand in for glass in places where glass is not the right choice. Plexiglass and polycarbonate are both considered safety glass.

Plexiglass is clear, stiff and widely used for signs, covers and protective panels. It is cut to size. Polycarbonate is a different plastic. Polycarbonate, also known as Lexan, is virtually unbreakable. We offer polycarbonate along with plexiglass.

Clear plastic is lighter than glass. It is also a different material to cut, drill and clean, so it helps to say what the panel is for before you choose one.

What we offer

  • Clear plexiglass sheet, cut to size, for windows, signs and protective panels.
  • Polycarbonate sheet.

Plastic sheet is one of the things we make to size. If the job is a counter barrier, our page on sneeze guards and glass barriers covers measuring for those. If glass is a better fit, see cut to size and safety glass. The whole group of custom glass work is on one page.

If you have a particular product in mind, tell us when you call.

What to have ready when you call

  • What the panel is for: a window, a sign, a guard or a cover.
  • Inside or outside. Where the panel will be used affects the choice of material.
  • The width and height, and the shape if it is not a plain rectangle.
  • Whether you have a preference for plexiglass or polycarbonate, or want to talk it over.
  • How the panel will be mounted, and the size and position of any holes.
  • How many panels.
  • A photo of the opening, the frame or the spot where it goes.

A window opening is measured the same way for plastic as for glass, edge to edge and corner to corner, and the numbers are worth taking twice.

Good to know about plastic

Plastic sheet changes size a little as the temperature changes, so a panel set into a frame needs a small amount of room around its edges. Plastic also scratches more easily than glass, so a soft cloth is the usual way to clean it. Neither point is a reason to avoid plastic. They are the kind of detail that is easier to plan for before the panel is made than after it is installed.

If you are replacing a window pane with plastic, tell us why. Whether the reason is breakage, weight or the position of the window, it helps us talk about the right material.
