Custom glass from our Akron shop

Glass and clear plastic made to your size, for tables, shelves, cabinets, tanks and counters.

When a piece of glass has to fit a particular space, a standard size usually will not do. North Hill Glass and Mirror makes custom glass to your measurements and shape. Our shop is at 560 N. Main St in Akron, and the phone number is (330) 535-1558. Tell us what the glass is for, send the size and a photo, and we will talk it through.

What custom glass means

Custom glass is glass made for one job rather than pulled off a shelf. A table needs a top that matches the table. A cabinet needs a panel that fits the opening in the door. A fish tank needs a lid cut around its brace and its filter. In each case the size, the shape and the edge all come from you.

Most custom jobs start with a few questions. What is the glass for? Where does it sit? What are its measurements? Is it replacing something, and if so, can we see what it replaces? Starting with those makes the rest of the job easier.

What we make

Each of these has its own page, with more about what we need from you:

Cut to size and safety glass. Glass made to size for doors, windows and tables, plus polished edges, holes and notches. We also offer tempered safety glass, which is 4 to 8 times stronger than regular glass, for patio doors, patio tables and similar uses. This is the page to read if you have a measurement and a place for the glass but no other plan.

Glass table tops. Table tops in any size or shape, for coffee tables, dining tables and other furniture that needs a glass top.

Glass shelves. Shelves cut to size for homes and businesses, for cabinets, walls, bathrooms and displays.

Cabinet, furniture and display case glass. Glass for cabinet doors and furniture, and custom glass display cases built to a plan.

Acrylic and polycarbonate sheet. Plexiglass and polycarbonate for windows, signs and protective panels, for the places where plastic is a better fit than glass.

Sneeze guards and glass barriers. Protective barriers made to the size of your counter.

Aquarium lids. Custom glass lids for fish tanks, cut to the tank and its openings.

Mirrors are a related line of work with a group of their own. See our mirror services.

Glass or plastic

Most of the jobs above can be done in glass. A few can be done in clear plastic as well, such as a protective panel or a window in a place that takes hard knocks. Glass is hard and stays clear and flat, and it resists scratching. Plastic is lighter and is made differently, so it behaves differently when cut and cleaned. If you are unsure, describe the use and we can talk through the choice with you.

Things that decide the job

Three things tend to decide a custom glass job. The first is size, because nothing can be made until the measurements are right. The second is use. A shelf, a door panel and a tabletop each carry different demands, and some of them call for safety glass. The third is the edge, since a raw edge is not left as it is. Tell us all three when you call and the rest comes together.

What to have ready when you call

  • What the glass is for and where it will sit.
  • The size and shape, or a tracing for anything that is not a plain rectangle.
  • A photo of the space, the piece it replaces or the furniture it fits.
  • How many pieces you need.
  • How you want the edges finished, and whether the glass needs holes or notches.

You can start with partial information. A photo and a short description are enough for a first conversation.
